Rachel Florman
project: distant relatives

About This Project

In the summer of 1996, I lived with my uncle and aunt in Berkley, CA. For two months I spent every day with my cousins, ages five and one. Returning to New York, my biggest sadness was that I wouldn't be around as my cousins grew up. This set of photographs includes pictures from every time I saw my cousins from 1996 through 2003.

About This Project

Before my final year of college, I considered moving to the west coast. To test it out, I spent the summer living with my uncle, aunt and two cousins in Berkley, California. For two months, I was with my cousins, ages five and one, every day. In the end, I was drawn back to New York. The three hour time difference made the distance seem extreme. But leaving California meant that I wouldn’t be around as my cousins grew up. This set of photographs includes pictures from every time I saw my cousins from 1996 through 2003.
